Several speakers at today's anti-war protest in London, including
Tariq Ali and Paul Mackney, issued the slogan "Vive la France".
A few people were carrying French flags and I even saw some
tradtionally dressed Muslims holding a banner which included this
slogan.
The French are credited with scuppering the attempt by the US and
British governments to get UN legitimacy for their attack on Iraq by
threatening to veto a second resolution.
To me this completely ignores France's motives, which a far from being
pristine. As a power with commercial interests in Middle East oil,
but no military muscle of consequence, France must perforce be
diplomatic in the pursuit of its interests and wasn't willing to be
associated with the Bush gang's war.
Ken Livingstone in his speech today related that how as an eleven
year-old in 1956, he had delivered a speech at a school debate
opposing Britain, France and Israel's attack on Egypt during the Suez
crisis. As is well known, the US for its own reasons refused to back
them and they were forced to withdraw.
Was any Socialist at the time saying "Long Live America!"
