The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition has been deeply involved in efforts of solidarity with the Haitian people, who are facing a U.S.-inspired armed uprising and threatened coup
d'etat against the democratically-elected government of Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

Having been overthrown by a right-wing military coup in 1991 (during the first Bush administration), President Aristide's current government is faced with a similar
threat. During recent years, the U.S. government has led an embargo on international financial aid to Haiti. The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the International Republican Institute (IRI) have funneled support to the so-called opposition.

Today, there will be a press conference in Washington DC at the National Press Club featuring Ramsey Clark, Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, Ben Dupuy, Jennifer Harbury and others.
The press conference will expose the U.S. role in the current Haitian crisis. The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition is also urging people to participate in demonstrations scheduled for tomorrow - Saturday, February 28. For those in the New York City area, there will be a demonstration starting in the Haitian community at 11 am at Utica Ave and Eastern Parkway with a march to Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, NY.

ON THE U.S. ROLE IN THE HAITIAN CRISIS

Human rights and religious leaders, and experts in international law to announce international campaign to defend constitutional democracy in Haiti

On Friday, February 27 at 12 noon there will be a press conference at the National Press Club in the First Amendment Room where leaders and personalities from across the U.S. will voice their opposition to the coup d'état being orchestrated against the democratically-elected government of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in Haiti.
The speakers will examine the behind-the-scenes role of the Bush administration in the crisis in Haiti.

The press conference is a response to the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Haiti, where former military and paramilitary leaders are threatening to march on the capital. President Jean-Bertrand Aristide has vowed not to accede to their demand that he resign. The stage for nation-wide confrontation has been set.

"It is apparent that the Bush administration has had a rocky relationship with President Aristide and is tolerating the dilatory tactics of the opposition in Port-au-Prince," said Ray Laforest of the Haiti Support Network. "It is clear to us who know Haiti that this is not an uprising of the Haitian people against their government, but rather a military operation by Haitian former soldiers and death squads with the support of shadowy sectors in the U.S. and Dominican governments."

EMERGENCY DEMONSTRATION
AGAINST A NEW COUP D'ETAT IN HAITI

Saturday, February 28

On Saturday, February 28, the Committee to Respect President Aristide's 5 Year Mandate will demonstrate against a new coup d'etat in Haiti.  This coalition will be marching behind the slogans, "US & France:  Stop Supporting Subversion in Haiti," and "Election, Yes, Coup d'Etat, No."

In response to the growing crisis in Haiti and the French government's call for Aristide's removal, Johnnie Stevens of the International Action Center said, "The call for the overthrow of Aristide, the democratically elected President of Haiti, by France, the former colonial power, is clearly racist.  Aristide's demand that France pay the 12 billion in reparations owed to Haiti is Chirac's real concern.  France and the U.S. are both jockeying to maintain influence in the region and destroy a militant movement of masses of poor Haitians."

Speakers will include Ray LaForest, Attorney Michael Tarif Warren, former Attorney General Ramsey Clark, Sara Flounders from the International Action Center, and Teresa Gutierrez from International A.N.S.W.E.R., William Camacaro of the Alberto Lovera Bolivarian Circle, and Father Luis Barrios of Iglesia Sam Romero de las Americas, as well as representatives from the Dominican Workers Party, SNAFU (the Support Network for an Armed Forces Union), AMAT (the Association of Mexican American Workers), and other community organizations.

Endorsers include the Guyanan/American Workers United, Casa Mexico, the People's Video Network, the Committee in Support of the Iraqi People, Ramsey Clark, the Dominican Workers Party, SNAFU, and the International A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition.

The Committee to Respect President Aristide's 5 Year Mandate includes Fanmi Lavalas, Patisan Jezikri, the Haiti Action Committee, the Haiti Support Network, Ajoupa, OBNH, Plusieurs Organisations Regionales, Leve Kanpe, Komite Sipo pou PPN, and the International Action Center.

Départ d'Aristide

PORT-AU-PRINCE (AP) - Le président haïtien Jean-Bertrand Aristide a quitté Haïti dimanche, a déclaré à l'Associated Press Leslie Voltaire, ministre des Haïtiens vivant à l'étranger et un de ses proches conseillers.

Le président était en route pour la République dominicaine. Leslie Voltaire a précisé qu'il allait demander l'asile politique au Maroc, à Taïwan ou au Panama.

Jean-Bertrand Aristide subissait les pressions de la communauté internationale depuis plusieurs jours pour quitter le pouvoir, mais il avait encore affirmé samedi qu'il était "hors de question" qu'il parte.

Affirmant céder aux appels de Washington, Guy Philippe avait annoncé samedi que ses forces attendraient "un ou deux jours" avant d'attaquer la capitale, déjà en proie aux violences et pillages. AP

Le président Aristide a quitté le pouvoir à Haïti  Le président haïtien, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a abandonné le pouvoir à Haïti selon des sources concordantes.
