NWFP jihadis destroy music shops in Miranshah

Islamabad, May 7 (ANI): Just days after militants in Pakistan's NWFP's North Waziristan Agency distributed leaflets warning the local populace of closing down their music and video shops, a bomb destroyed three music and video shops in Miranshah.

The explosion also partially damaged seven other shops in the vicinity, which sold TV sets, audio and videocassettes and rented out music and movie CDs.

Officials in Miranshah said that the incident took place at 1:00 am on Friday, a day after the provincial government banned the public display of firearms and launched a disarmament drive.

However, no casualties were reported as the streets were deserted at the time of the explosion, the Daily Times reported.

Officials further said that it would be too early to accuse any particular group or person over the incident, though it is believed that militants having links to the Al Qaeda and the Taliban distributed the hand-written leaflets earlier this week asking hotels and music shops to stop showing television and selling DVD movies within five days or face the consequences.

"It is too early to point a finger at any group or anybody," an official was quoted as saying.

"You shopkeepers will be responsible for any damage if our message is not taken seriously," the handwritten leaflet distributed by the militants read.

The mountainous and tribal Wana region has been a hot bed of jihad. Al Qaeda militants and remnants of the Taliban militia have for long been believed to have taken sanctuary there following the military offensive launched against them by the US led coalition forces in neighbouring Afghanistan. Hindu turned Muslim teacher asked to wear saree

Behrampore (West Bengal), May 7 (ANI): A controversy has erupted in a state school after the school authorities asked a Hindu turned Muslim teacher not to wear the traditional burqa in the school.

Susmita Mondal, a Hindu by birth, has recently converted to Islam and teaches English at the Amtala Annadamani Girls' High School in Berhampore.

Mondal said she would not compromise on her religious freedom.

"They say that the atmosphere at the school will get vitiated. I always put on the burqa when I go out. The guardian and superintendent should come to a consensus on this. They should come to a conclusion what they should do. But I will not give up my religion," said Mondal.

Mondal believes that wearing a burqa does not violate the dress code stipulated by the state's Board of Secondary Education.

But teachers fear that if students follow Mondal's dress code it would end up segregating them on religious lines.

At least 80 percent of the students of the school, set up in 1970, are Muslims.

The head of the school denied any wrongdoing of compelling Mondal not to follow Muslim dress code.

"We asked her why she wears a burqa when all the other teachers wear saree. When we told this to her she got upset. After that we did not say anything. But she has claimed that she was insulted and tortured. I was in this room but I don't think nothing of that sort happened," said Gowri Bhoumick, teacher in-charge of the school. (ANI)
